Frequently asked questions

What is a pip, and how is it different from a point?

A pip is the standard price increment for an instrument, 0.0001 on most forex pairs and 0.01 on JPY pairs. A point is often a broker's smaller sub-division. The calculator labels each instrument correctly so you compare like for like.

How is pip value calculated?

Pip value depends on the instrument, your position size and your account currency. The calculator converts one pip of movement into your USD account currency for the size you enter.

Why does pip value change between instruments?

Contract sizes and quote currencies differ, so one pip on gold isn't worth the same as one pip on EURUSD. That's why it's worked out per instrument rather than assumed.

What's the pip value of a standard, mini and micro lot?

The calculator shows all three side by side, since a mini lot is one-tenth and a micro lot one-hundredth of a standard lot's pip value.

Can I see what a specific move is worth?

Yes. Enter a number of pips or points and it shows the value of that whole move at your position size, not just a single pip.

Is pip value the same on every broker?

For the same instrument, size and account currency it's effectively the same. Small differences come from each broker's exact contract specs and conversion rates.
